What is DOS

The full name of MS-DOS is Microsoft Disk Operating System. It is the most popular operating system used in microcomputers. Microsoft’s operating system is called DOS because it mostly performs the work of input and output related to disk.

History of DOS

IBM first developed an operating system for personal computers called pc-dos. A programmer named Bill Gates collaborated in its development. Later Bill Gates formed his company Microsoft Corporation.

In August 1981, Microsoft Corporation developed version 1.0 of the operating system called MS-Dos, which was developed for IBM’s personal computers.

In the year 1983, when microcomputers with hard disks were developed, the MS-Dos 2.0 version came on the market.

This operating system made it possible to store multiple files on the same disk, as well as the principles of file and directory.

Microcomputers with Intel 80286 processors were developed in the year 1984, then MS-Dos 3.0 and MS-Dos 4.0 versions were developed.

The first version 2.00 of DOS became available in the market. Since then till date versions of DOS 3.00, 3.10, 3.20, 3.30, 4.00, 4.01, 5.00, 6.00, and 6.22 have been made available in the market.

All the new versions used to include some new commands in addition to containing the commands of the old versions and in later versions, some work was done to make the commands of the old versions more effective.

But in general, later versions contained all the commands from earlier versions, with a few exceptions.
